The Allen-Bradley 1785-BCM is a legacy Backup Communication Module designed specifically to establish high-availability, fault-tolerant architectures within the PLC-5 programmable controller platform. Occupying a single slot inside a standard 1771 I/O chassis alongside a primary PLC-5 processor, this module functions as the core coordination bridge for an Allen-Bradley Hot Backup System. It works in identical pairs (one in the primary chassis and one in the secondary chassis) to continuously monitor the health, operational status, and memory states of the running controller. In the event of a primary processor fault, power loss, or network breakdown, the 1785-BCM manages a seamless, high-speed switchover to the backup chassis in milliseconds, ensuring uninterrupted plant operations, safeguarding real-time process data, and preventing costly manufacturing downtime.
