Overview

The 1794-IA8 is an industrial-grade discrete input interface module developed by Allen-Bradley brand. Designed as a modular component for the highly flexible FLEX I/O distributed platform, this hardware module operates as a remote 120V AC sensing interface. It allows central programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to monitor the real-time status of field instruments—such as pushbuttons, limit switches, and selector toggles—over a chosen industrial network fieldbus (such as EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, or DeviceNet) via an attached network adapter module. The module features a compact, open-style fingerprint engineered to plug directly into a specialized 1794 terminal base unit (such as the 1794-TB2, 1794-TB3, or 1794-TBN), which separates the terminal wiring from the active electronic module. This intelligent split-architecture design optimizes panel footprint efficiency and reduces assembly costs on the plant floor. Furthermore, it supports Removal and Insertion Under Power (RIUP) capability, enabling maintenance engineers to hot-swap a faulty module without shutting down the system power or disrupting the communication of adjacent field modules, drastically increasing overall plant runtime and productivity.
